Quando arrivò a Parigi e si iscrisse alla Sorbona, Maria Sklodowska aveva già 24 anni. In Polonia aveva dovuto lavorare come governante per mettere da parte i soldi necessari a intraprendere gli studi in scienze fisiche. Il nome con cui divenne famosa è quello del marito Pierre Curie, che la aiutò nelle ricerche su una sostanza sconosciuta che aveva proprietà assai curiose: emetteva energia, luce e calore. Era l’alba della fisica nucleare, ma anche l’inizio dell’era delle donne nel mondo della scienza. Dopo la morte improvvisa di Pierre, Marie portò avanti la sua carriera, fin troppo brillante e indipendente, scontrandosi con la mentalità conservatrice dell’Europa del primo Novecento.
